Almost all accounts on a computer system have some method of restricting access to the content, probably in the form of a password. Without a password hack, to gain access to the system you need a valid ID and password to login and see the protected area. This is how passord hack comes in to play. For privacy concerns the system usually prints asterisks in place of the real characters.
When you enter a password it is processed through some type of algorithm to generate a hash. The original text that made up the password text is scrambled, in a one-way hash. This way the string of characters that cannot be reversed to find the original text. That makes password hack very difficult on some servers. Computer systems do not decrypt the stored password during authentication, they store scrambled hash. When you login, you supply an account and password. This password is put through an algorithm that produces a one-way hash. This hash is compared to the hash stored on the system. If they are identical access is granted.
Of course, some algorithms are much better than others at generating this one-way hash.
To password hack you need to get a copy of the one-way hash stored on the server, and then using the algorithm generate your own hash until you get a match. Finding a match, whatever word you used to generate your hash will allow you to login to that server. Obviously this can time many attempts and a lot of effort. That is why scripts and programs that automate the process are used to password hack. Unfortuantly, there are lots of freeware password hack programs available on the internet.
A dictionary password hacker takes a list of dictionary words, and trys them one by one to see if they work. When the password matches the stored hash, the password has been a successful hack and you gain acces to the content.
Some of the password hack software allow the hacker to completely change the pattern of each word in the wordlist. These rulesets and filters allow crackers to change "blue" to "bloe" with many variations fully utilize all possibilities in their word list. The better the password hack software the more combinations and inversion can be done to one list. You can see why webmasters and system admins hate a password hack hurler as they can quickly bring a web server to overload conditions.

Brute force attacks, really mean that a massive amounts of automated tries at the password hack are made against a server. This can be very effective, because dictionary attacks succeed so often because people base their passwords on short, easy to remember words. The larger the dictionary file, the better the chance the passwordhack attack will succeed. Some easily available lists are hundreds of thousand of names long!
Set up your server to time-out an account after 3 to 5 failed log in attempts. Make sure you log the IP address and account information for future reference. Check the log files regularly to find attempted password hack attacks.
Put a time out period so if they do not log in properly after 4 attempts, further attempts to log from that IP address so get a wait of several minutes. Your best defense is to slow down the attempts making it to time consuming for the hack and saving your system resources.
The chances of getting caught are actually quite high and you really create negative havoc on the internet. That is why most expert password hackers like to run the cracking on a zombie pc or otherwise compromised systems for obvious reasons.
